glottal, glottis:
formed by a constriction in the
glottis (the air passage through the larynx or voicebox, between the vocal folds).
(See the diagrams of
the principal organs of articulation and
places of articulation.)
The two most common glottal sounds are the glottal
stop
[
]
and the glottal fricative [h].
In phonetic transcription,
a question mark [2] (?)
is sometimes used as a substitute for the standard
glottal stop character
[
],
because it is readily accessible on typewriters
and in standard fonts.
In
practical orthographies for the
languages of Mexico
(as well as some languages elsewhere),
it is often written with a saltillo
(
).
See place of articulation, see also voiced. [Spanish: glotal, glotis]
