mid [1]: pronounced with the tongue neither high [1] nor low [1], but in-between. (See the diagrams of the principal organs of articulation and phonetic symbols for vowels.) The vowel "e" as in "end" is a mid vowel, and so is the first "o" of "coronary". (The "long o" sound in most English words, e.g. "home", is a diphthong, [ou].) See also close, open. mid [2]:
in a tonal language,
a medium-frequency pitch
which contrasts with a
higher [3] and a
lower [3] pitch.
In a language with three tones,
the mid tone is sometimes represented by the absence of a written accent,
or sometimes by a macron.
